That was the vote count 50 years ago today – August 30, 1967 – when the United States Senate confirmed Thurgood Marshall as the first African American Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Rarely, had any nominee been so qualified. Thirty-two appearances before the Court garnering twenty-nine wins, the most notable being Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark decision relegating to the constitutional ash heap the noxious principle of separate-but-equal.
